This is a big question, but the best place to start is booking an appointment with your headmaster/mistress as soon as possible.  They are there to help guide you through this process and will be able to give you the guidance you require.  It is not complicated process, but it one worth starting early (in Year 5) as your choices may determine how you proceed.  For instance, some non-fee paying grammar schools have very specific entrance exams that may require a tutor to help your son to learn the 'exam approach'.  On the other hand, public schools, especially for boys, may have their own exams or accept the results from the 11+ common entrance exam.  Good luck and don't delay booking your appointment.
Sorry, cnnsky, one more thing...I not sure, but I don't think SATs have any bearing on your secondary school choice.  By the time your son take his SATs  you will have been given and accepted your place at a secondary school.
