Any idea how much chimney sweps charge? Apparently, by law I have to have my chimney swept as I am having a gas fire fitted.

Hello . Had our chimney swept last year for the same reason and the chimney sweep charged 25. This is Dorset tho.
Wot law is that r u aware, Ethel?? I haven't had mine swept for at least 10y and have a log fire every winter.

NO ONE will make me sweep mine at my cost.....if they pay ;-)
As far as I am aware there is no such law.

However, the fire must be fitted by a Corgi registered gas fitter and he would be well within his rights to inspect the chimney, carry out smoke tests and other tests and refuse to fit the fire until the chimney has been cleaned.
I had mine swept last year for 35. There may or not be a law requiring you to do this, but it is advisable.

The Corgi registered gas fitter who came to install my new gas fire said that by law (his words, not mine) he could not install the fire until I had obtained a certificate from a NACS registered chimney sweep to confirm it had been swept. So hopefully that answers Ethel and terambulan. Although I don't remember mentioning or asking for details as to which law this relates to or log fires.

I have now booked one and the cost will be 35. So thanks to mcandrew and spudqueen.

Once again I, like so many others, have suffered the eternal problem with this website in that only 50% of the answers submitted actually answered my question.
when the corgi fitter refers to the "law" he actually means the gas regulations which are indeed a legal requirement.

i do not have my copy of the gas regs or a copy of the british standard covering fires in front of me as i am away at my girlfriends at the moment. I can however tell you that if you are having a gas fire installed on a flue/chimeny that has reviously been used with solid fuel then it is advisable to have the chimney swept first to remove the soot deposits.

we called a chimney sweep in 2 weeks ago in Birmingham and he charged 40
