My friend is having a new front door fitted soon which is costing her around 600 from an independant Glazier.

Before she found this particular door for 600 she was visited by both Zenith and Everest (at differing times obviously). The Everest Rep spent over 3 hours trying to persued her to purchase a door from them for 3000 and the Zenith Rep spent around 2 hours doing the same for the approx. the same amount of money. The Everest rep even came back the following day and tried to barge into her home after she had said that she is having the door done by another company!

What I don't understand is how do Zenith and Everest get any business charging the prices that they do when you can get doors and windows at the same quality for so much cheaper? And why are they so PUSHY?

Hiya mrs

My new job is selling Norwegian timber windows and doors and our main entrance doors are around 1000 but I know why they are that price. We dont do hard sell, we only quote to requests and I follow them up weeks later and its only for feedback. There is no need for heavy handedness.

Hows your sore nose today?

Hi hun,

I'm fine, just got the little cut on the bridge of my nose. I put some spray plaster on it to keep out the little germies. Lol

The Everest Rep fist said to her that toor would be 5k and then after a supposed phone call to his manager dropped it down to 3k!!! Its daylight robbery if you ask me. I'm surprised they haven't been on Watchdog!

Lol lol *fist* should read *first* and *toor* should read *door*!

;-)
What a rip-off, even solid oak isnt that price.

The solid oak sounds quite nice and reasonably priced for what it is.
I recently had new windows and doors and foolishly invited one of the above named companies to come and quote .... after 3 hours I politely asked the saleswoman to leave - she was in serious mode and determined to get a sale - lots of rubbish like ringing her boss and *arranging* special deals etc etc... Their prices were like 5 times what a decent local company were charging, so the tack was, well, how much can you afford and that finance could be arranged !

After 4 hours, I just ignored her pitch and cooked my dinner, which I then proceeded to serve up and eat (just me... hehe) in front of her. Then, after eating my dinner, I stood up and said, "ok, you need to **** off now, I'm going out", raising my arm towards the front door. I wasn't even prepared by now to be remotely pleasant to her.

She left.

Phew... never again....

I think that a lot of the time, the poor sods receiving the quote are simply bamboozled into accepting stuff, just to get rid of the salesperson. This sort of practice should be banned in my opinion, it's disgusting behaviour and is why the double glazing industry has such a bad reputation !

Next time I want any new doors or windows, I will contact Wee Al !

I agree Juggles. There should definitely be some kind of monitoring watchdog onto these legal theives. It is disgusting to think they can go into elderly peoples homes and get them to sign the rest of their lives away!
I sold replacement windows for one of the above co's for a while. A bit of a rebel, I never called up for the manager's discount, only went in at full price if they were monied, and as the only woman, I usually got the old folk appointments.

One day I was called, from my morning lie in, by the boss and told to get my ass into the branch pronto. He asked me what the hell I was doing going to an appointment and saying they only needed thick curtains!

She was in her nineties and complaining about being chilly sitting by her perfectly fine patio doors. I told him I need to sleep nights and ripping off old folk would prevent that!

I sold 1 in 3 appointments, without pressure on anyone. All my customers had my home phone number, I never had a complaint or cancellation, and had several follow on orders. If people choose not to shop around and buy a cheaper product then whose fault is that?

ps I bought windows for 2 houses in the last year - from a local supplier.....
unfortunately there are lot of people out there who to put it politely are not 'streetwise', thats what these companies rely on...i have a family member who has just had a conservatory built by a major co....21,000+ !!!!...he accepted the first price i l know if he had argued they would have reduced it by 20%..the salesman must have thought it was christmas.the family member said what a real nice salesman....hmmm...bet he was
I am 100% certain the same thing could have been built by a local builder for less than 10,000...or if project managed 8,000...(or less)...
2 true stories for you

my old workmate invited one of the major window firms round to quote him for new windows in his ex-council flat, cant rem which firm it was but the salesman quoted him 22,000, my mate just laughed in his face and told him to get out the salesman then got out his calculator, jabbed at a few buttons and then said we can discount it to 9,000. mymate finally got it done by a small local firm for 3000.

and my missus was telling me that before she met me she had a salesman round from one of the big firms. he was in the house for 3 hours and she couldn't get rid of him, then he turned round to her and said "ive got a nice blue movie in my car shall i nip out and get it" you don't mess with my missus, she want ballistic and physically launched him out the door!

These stories are typical. Something similar happened to me over 10 years ago. A guy came round saying that my outer walls needed re-texturing or pointing or whatever the hell its called. After 3 or even more hours of telling me that the brickwork would erode and my house could collapse within 10 years if I didn't have it done he quoted me 10k. After I got up off the floor and dusted myself down he made a call to his boss and said that he'd managed to lower it to 3k! Stupidly I signed on the dotted line and he left.

I couldn't stop thinking about it all night and then decided that I would cancel the agreement the next day which I did.

Oh and my house is still standing :-)
