Strategic lighting, loads of soft matching cushions, good over- all colour scheme in the room - and just a wee bit untidy maybe. If everywhere's "perfect", with nothing out of place, the room can feel "cold", and more of a show-piece than one with a welcoming atmosphere.
warm colours and low lighting, with a bright focal point in your fireplace.
They say if you want to sell your house, bake some bread, apparently it evokes a warm homely feeling.

Lots of scented candles are available to set the mood, orange one smells very Christmasy or maybe make some mulled wine or stud an orangs with cloves to make your own pomanda.
Warm colours, throws and cushions, soft lighting, books and magazines, a proper fire, older furniture, photographs, some scattered toys, a bit of dust, cats and dogs - anything that makes a home looked lived in. I agree with Ice.Maiden.

Watch all these how to sell your house programs and then do the exact opposite! Minimalism and neatness is just not welcoming.
I dont have any ceiling lights - just lamps dotted around on things... so you can turn them on and off as you need less or more...that way you don't have a harsh bright light anywhere...and try not to have too many white shades
