wasps come where there is food for them. so...cover food and drinks if eating outside, clear windfalls if you have fruit trees. Nests can be destroyed with wasp nest spray from a diy store. It shoots a jet of insecticide at the nest from a safe distance. If you are really infested, say in your roof space, then get an exterminator out as he will have protective gear and stronger chemicals. I'm not sure that wasp traps are really helpful as 1 they attract wasps and 2 if there is still a food source, more wasps will come to take the place of the dead ones. Also you might be reincarnated as a wasp one day!
If you want to get rid of a nest, try ringing your local council (Environmental Health). Some do it for free, some charge a small fee (about 25 I think).
It does depend on the scale of the problem! If you have a nest then I would go with sddsddean and say call in the experts- wasps are very ferocious and will sting without provocation. If you mean just the odd few here and there then there are many ways of attracting and killing wasps- just tap your question into google and i'm sure you'll find some old tricks of the trade.
Treat them with great respect!! I am A pest controler and get stung on a regular basis, If you can access the nest easily use a product called wasp nest destroyer, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT IF YOU NEED TO GO UP A LADDER OR IN A ROOF SPACE, you need a fast getaway unless you have a bee suit
i found a good website www.trapapest.co.uk to combat my wasp problem.
