When people mention ''white vinegar'' as a cleaning product, do they mean the kind of clear vinegar you can just purchase at your local supermarket, or is there another type?

Yes, the clear kind. Ordinary, bog-standard, cheapo malt vinegar.
'Non brewed condiment', which is basically acetic acid diluted with water (which is what we call vinegar) is the stuff. Malt vinegar used for cleaning can leave a malty aroma behind, but works just as well.
I have just sprayed in (in an old spray) on my sinks, loos, bath etc. It smells like I have just had fish and chips but comes up lovely ... Leave it on for a few minuts then Cream Cleaner and rinse and dry . Then open the windows !
ordinary white vinegar diluted withcold water is brill for cleaning windows
