You are going to need some tough customers to deal with not just the lack of light, but also the dryness and the lack of nutrients that are likely to go with it. Two very dependable shrubs that will take the conditions are Lonicera pileata (glossy green leaves with white flowers) and Mahonia aquifolium (big jagged leaves, clusters of small yellow flowers followed by blue/black berries).
We have a tall Leylandii hedge( belonging to next door) - under it are growing: holly, viburnum plicatum, cotoneaster horizontalis, pyracantha, cornus, eleagnus, lonicera nitida; and also various ivies growing on posts and frames - to make any shape required.
