In the instructions for our Blomberg dishwasher it says that salt should be added to the machine before first use.

Well, I didn't do that, and now I'm wondering if it's okay to put the salt in now after a year's use.

Or is there even any need to do it. The salt indicator is always lit on the machine.

If you live in a soft water area, there's very little need for salt.If in a hard water area, you'll get better results. (The salt is there to regenerate the ion-exchange resin in the built-in water softener.)

If your things come out clean and streak free, don't bother, especially if you use an all in one cleaning product and don't live in a hard water area

When my salt indicator is lit up it means my machine needs salt adding.

Mine does not clean as well without the added salt.

No salt in mine, and no light (I probably found the way to turn the light off!)
