I am looking for a fat fryer but not an electric one, just a saucepan type with basket inside. John Lewis have one for 45, does anyone know where I can get one cheaper -- perhaps online? Everyone seems to be selling electric ones.

Electric fryers are far safer as they are thermostaticly controlled. You run a real risk of a fat fire using a saucepan with no control over the temperature, it only takes a few minutes of neglect, a major cause of house fires and burns! Please think again.
I very rarely deep-fry so I bought just the basket in a cookshop (very cheap!) and used a heavy pan that I already had. You might find it easier just to get the basket.
Pop down to argos, 2 chip pan types 9.99 & 29.99 this one is prestige
Argos sell them

And quite the correct comment re the danger of fires.

Make sure you never fill the open pan more than one third of cold oil to allow for the oil and contents to expand when hot. If you are unsure about the best frying temperatures, use an oil thermometer for the best results.

Do yourself and your family a big favour and buy a electric one.

As the previous answers have suggested there should be NO compromise where safety is concerned.

At least the electric one has a thermostat and will switch off if it gets too hot.

Buy a decent stainless steel one which can be washed in a dishwasher ( not the electric element of course) and the biggest curse of all deep fat friers is minimised.

As an ex firefighter I recommend a deep fat fryer. Much safer, and the aftermath of a chip pan fire is not a pretty site. I have seen many a kitchen ruined.
