Bath To Shower

I am going to have to think about this as I am a little nervous stepping over the bath to get the shower.

I will be going for the full length (of the bath) shower so that I need to I can put "aids" in ie like a little chair and grab handles.

I don't want my floor to be touched as it was very expensive a few years ago - also I am happy enough with the power of the shower in having said that it is old.

Won't be thinking of doing this until the new year. But would love to hear of any advice or unusual things to be used in the shower - really nice fancy shower door etc.

lots of options - mindboggling so!

I would like to go that route but have 2 issues:
1. the shower would be 1/2 way across a window.
2. My drains are above the floor so I think the shower tray would have to be substantially raised to allow drainage.

Also it would probably mean re-tiling & re-flooring the entire bathroom, quite a big job.

I too got rid of my bath as I suffer recurring back pain & found it difficult to get in & out of the bath. Best thing I ever did. My shower is a corner shower & is quite roomy.

thanks for answers - but surely Davebro re the re-tiling and reflooring - if the plumber can make the length of shower fit the gap of missing bath - I do have some tiles that would (in my head) be enough for the bottom of the wall (where bath would have been) and floor shouldn't be touched either as I have a few of those tiles too.

If I do go for a new shower I do like a powerful one and this one I use is great as Mira should I get a new power shower since the it will all be "new".

JJ, perhaps you could discuss all the options with your plumber. He/she should be able to answer all your queries.

Jenny - that's fine if you can make it work without too much disturbance.
There would probably be room to move about in the shower - I would probably go for a "rainfall" shower head with an additional handset.

I did this some years ago and it was an easy enough job - full length shower tray over existing floor tiles, drain connected to original bath drain. Luckily my wall tiles were easy to match so didn't need to be replaced and the plaster behind the bath was sound.
Replacing the shower should be easy. Seat and grab railed installed.

Alternatively there are companies that rip out your bath and install a full length plastic shower cubicle but I don't like those. Personal choice, of course

Oh - and the pipework to/from my washbasin runs behind the bath and would be exposed if the bath were removed. Problems, problems!

Barry - that's right - friend converted bath to shower and plumber or whoever put up that long plastic awful shower screen.

Barry my bath to shower conversion sounds like yours - tiles would be easy matched up as in floor tiles and drainage would be where the bath drains. If I was younger I could have done it myself.

JJ, I meant the cubicle is one piece moulded plastic instead of proper tiles, the door/screen glass

have you thought of using simple options first? A shower board for example, a handle on the wall, a graduated step

The Builder

A standard bath is 1700mm long, Jj. A 1700mm "walk-in" shower tray should be ideal.
Glass doors and screens combined are available for these.

A plumber would have to look to see how the waste pipe runs, and how it's connected to the drainage.
A tray is a lot lower than a bath waste. In fact, for a proper "walk-in", the waste usually has to run BELOW the floor.
Often quite possible, but you'd have to actually be there to see if this were possible.
I think it's a great idea Jj. You wouldn't regret it.
Don't fixate over the existing tiling though. Some extra tiling is well worth it.

We swapped our bath for a walk in bathtub for me with a shower attachment. When I want a shower I can walk in sit down and shower comfortably by holding the shower attachment, or I can bath! The height of the tub means I can do that without any water getting to the floor and I can also wash my hair.

Hubby uses the downstairs shower room!
