If I was living in a flat then I wouldn't get a cat. But I live in a semi with a garden and plenty of roaming territory. My cat goes out the catflap and I have no idea where it goes or where it poops.

I haven't moved into my house yet but the above scenario will happen when I do. I'm getting two cats or kittens from a local rescue centre.
live and let live... compromise.. put more effort into your planting etc... but know that there will always be pests of one kind or another coming into your garden..as in life..... suck it up !!
aw Tiggs..how lovely.. always better to get a pair so they can play together..and terrorise you !!
perhaps Bob has the message by now..... there are plenty of things you can try as suggested.
My apologies to you Bob for leading this thread astray. Please look at the other answers for better help than I gave!

By that I guess you mean other peoples gardens and vegetable plots.

Bit of a selfish way of thinking ?

I have managed to 'adopt' a cat. It sits in the garden far more than it's owners and doesnt foul it (dont like doing it on their own doorstep usually). I dont feed it just give it fuss and attention - even though I have to go wash my hands as I am extremely allergic to them.

Doesnt stop the digging unfortunately, but nets plastic cloches (I use Thompson & Morgan ones) together with a sonic deterrent near seeds I have just planted.
You can't stop cats from roaming though.
ough
My cat is mainly an indoor cat, by choice. He's not a very nice cat though. He's so rude he's funny.

He's not even my cat. He belongs to my son. We just pay his vet bills and buy him food.
Exactly, Minty, can't wait :o)

After Tigger and Blue passed away I didn't want to get any more cats as I wanted to wait until little Tigs was older and we moved. Must be stressful for cats moving home too.
My house overlooks woodland, ymb, so not selfish as you put.
jj109 what a totally unhelpful answer.

OP - There are many products you can buy to stop cats digging in your garden. Some easy and cheap ways are:

Buy a bag of cheap chili powder or cayanne pepper and spread between the rows of veg

Break up small sharp sticks and put them into the soil vertically every 2 or three inches

Surround the veg pch with sticks and get some string and criss cross the string through the veggies to prevent the cats getting in.

I have 3 chinchilla cats that are indoors or in a netted stable to stop them roaming & being stolen. Theyre definitely in atm as blackbirds & doves are sitting on eggs. My cats are too precious to risk them thieved.

Gardens can be very hazardous environments for cats. I suggest posting a copy of this to any cat owners who wish to protect their pet. Keep the cat in an enclosed garden, or your house, or dont buy one. https://www.yourcat.co.uk/cat-advice/cat-friendly-gardens/how-do-i-catproof-my-garden/ Neglect your duty as a pet owner by allowing your cat to roam on other people's property is cruelty.
i honestly don't get what talking to the owners will acheive - what are they going to do, keep the cat in forever, tie it up in the garden?
Agree spungle. Only wildlife should roam free. All pets are controllable by responsible owners.
Hello Bednobs, see my link on catproofing your garden- if you want a cat, either keep it inside as a housecat, or keep it in your garden, it can roam free as much as it likes in there. If neither is an option, don't keep a cat. Stick insects may be a better option.
Most cat owners are irresponsible.
What other animal is allowed as a pet to roam free crapping and peeing all over the place? Not only that, they kill birds and small mammals, but the owners couldn't care less because, out of sight out of mind.
I'd suggest an air rifle to solve your problem, not to kill the cats, but to put the owners windows through.
I read somewhere once that Tiger excrement scares the ???? out of cats. So if you live near a zoo maybe you could try asking for some.
some truly appalling answers on here.
Sad life you must lead if you are on constantly watching if your veggie patch is being pee-d on. Just shoo them off though if you see them doing it. I agree with most of the other posters and never, ever mention poison. You will be the chief suspect if local cats are found dead. One of my cats incidentally spends all her time outside roaming and comes in to pee and poo!! Strange animal.
