How to keep cats out of the garden

Prickly is best. Cats prefer to walk on soft, loose soil and will avoid prickly surfaces. Make your garden beds less inviting, or less like a litter box.
Use scent to keep the cats away. Cats dislike the smell of rue, lavender and pennyroyal, Coleus canina and lemon thyme. Plant a few of these throughout the garden.
There is no way to control cats unless you make them house cats so jj's advice is rubbish.

Get some sort of netting to put over the veg plot.
Umm - it is the owners problem, if they cannot control their cats whether they make them house cats or not is their decision, but if they are constantly annoying their neighbours, these people should not have cats. For them to have cats is totally selfish! They should have a pet more suitable to thei location and ability to look after it eg a goldfish, tortoise or budgie!!!
cats can't be controlled where they roam, its just not possible, unless they are house cats who are happy to stay inside.
I've got a cat. To keep him in I wouldn't be able to open a window in my house. He'll just jump out of it, they are fearless.

Cats can't be controlled. As far as my cats concerned we are just people living in HIS house.
i had a cat who roamed far and wide. until he got old and then passed away.
jj your attitude astounds me... get your veg in TESCO if you can't do something simple like net your patch... wildlife..including cats can't be controlled not to visit your patch..and your talk of poison etc may lead to a visit from a man in a uniform..... !!!!
JJ I understand it is not "your" plot for you read "one"
I have two cats myself Umm - I know what cats are like! ......but I don't let mine annoy other people. Maybe other people around you are not annoyed by your cats, in which case you are lucky. BUT if people were being annoyed, and you couldn't control your cat, eg by opening your windows when the cats were not in that room, then you should seriously consider having a different pet.
Minty, I could NEVER harm any animal! My house is like a sanctuary and have taking in loads of strays or injured animals. It is like an animal hospital at times. I have 2 cats, 11 dogs, a mongoose (with three legs) and about 60 different birds.

I am not against animals, I am against selfish animal owners!
poor cats is all I can say..how on earth can you stop a cat from annoying a neighbour ?? unless you go against all its natural instincts to roam and keep it banged up like a prisoner... even then a cat will find an open door or window... as for considering another pet ? that is an outrageous thing to suggest...
^^then stop such talk of poison...! even making threats like this can lead to serious trouble from the appropriate authorities..
and it is in NO WAY selfish to give your pet the freedom they relish...it is selfish of others that want to confine them against their instincts...
Do you take your cats out on a lead? Do you follow them everywhere?

If you cannot have a particular pet, without that pet annoying neighbours, then have a different pet!
absolutely not ! their problem !
Gosh, if we didn't keep cats as pets they'd be loads of strays.

The first thing I did when I got my cat is get him vaccinated and neatured.

None of my cats over the years have been able to reproduce yet you're talking to us like we're irresponsible.

btw - tortoises are really boring pets.
*not been able
Do you care for your pet really Minty? You will let it roam free with all the inherent dangers, crossing roads, vicious dogs, rat poison that you don't know about as somebody has come to the end of their tether and is just getting rid of "their" problem, and your pet will just disappear!

Is this what you want to happen. Be responsible for your pet, it is a lovely animal and deserves better!
