shoota, What an amazing British discovery, whoever else would think of taking sloes from the hedgerows & adding them to gin?
The French do make a similar tasting drink (but not as nice IMO) called 'epine' using the new leaves.

One of my favourite drinks, a great winter warmer.
Sloe vodka is good too if like me you aren't a gin lover.
I could do with a swig of that right now, it's ffreezing!

Shoota; pousse d'épine is absolutely delicious. 5l red wine, 1l local eau de vie, bag of sugar and an armful of young blackthorn shoots from around the base of the bush. Leave for a month then strain and drink sparingly. 15-20% abv, sweet and almondy. If you don't like the sound of it then stick to your sloe gin.

Khandro, you sip it from a 10cl glass. It lasts for ages.
Should be a good year for sloes this year. An old farmer relative called it a "Blackthorn winter"! But failing that, damson vodka or gin is a perfectly acceptable substitute.
