I Can Hear Running Water

I can always hear trickling/running water coming from my cistern. There is no water coming into the bathroom around the toilet and when I lifted up the cistern lid, I couldn’t see any leaks.

What can I do to stop it and will it be affecting my water bill? I’ve just had a water meter fitted, but I could hear it before this took place.

My flush is the double “press down” mechanism.

Nothing to do with the diaphragm. All that does is initially suck up water to start the syphon action. Broken diaphragm equals no flush, nothing to do with leaking valve.

The blue bit holds the valve, the screw on top of the threaded rod adjusts the water level.

New valve required like this.

better go catch it
Uncertain what second pic is,lol. What is happening is that the valve is not completely stopping water entering cistern which is going straight out again.

An easy quick fix. Turn water off, hopefully there will be an in-line service valve just before the cold water feed enters the cistern, if not, water off at the main stop cock.

You normally find that the replacement valve assembly is the correct length to connect to the water inlet pipe.

2nd pic is water trickling from the flush hole into the poop collector part of the toilet.
Got the second pic, lol. Yes, water coming from where the flushed water would appear.

Any friendly neighbours chrissa with a spanner to remove old valve.

In my experience these modern valves are seldom repairable and are cheap to replace. The old ballcock arm valve and the small rubber washer in a brass tube worked far better, and longer.
You can see from The B and Q one that the water goes in at the bottom, out of the top and fills the cistern. When the level rises it lifts the black float up, pushes up the adjustable lever and closes the valve. Fascinating really, lol.

Thanks all. If it had been simple I would have tried to fix it myself, but I’ve emailed my landlord and he’s very good. He can come and fix it.

Cheers.
First thing is to adjust the float level. It may be above the level that allows water into the flush valve.

If that doesn't fix it and it still runs, then you just need to replace the inlet valve.
sparklykid, if the cistern valve isn't set to cut off before the waterlevel reaches the overflow, then the water will just keep filling and run down the3 overflow as previously described.
Yes, good thinking builder. Move threaded rod one way or t'other till float lowers.
Just leave it - it ensures the water in the bowl is always nice and fresh for when the dog drinks it.
I would have thought that once the lid was taken off it would be obvious if the water level was higher than the overflow pipe.
Just looked at a magnified piccy of the first pic. The water level does seem lower than the overflow outlet.
It looks from pic No. 1 that the cistern is full as the float appears to be at the end of it's upward travel. My money is still on a replacement.
I've just brightened up your pic, chrissa. I agree with sparkly. The water level does appear to be low enough. That would suggest the inlet valve is Ok, otherwise the level would be to the top.

Maybe ................ the flush valve is faulty, letting water into the bowl while you're not looking ;o)

I’ve just taken the lid off and flushed it and I think that the thing does need replacing. It doesn’t seem to cut off the flow enough.
