Chimney?

I have a normal old unused chimney (from a Victorian house) in my room. It's on the 1st floor with one above. I sometimes get bird crap and feather but today I have rain drops. Not tons, but enough splats to annoy me. Is this normal, to have rain come down the chimney or is there a fault further up?

I think it sounds normal.
Wind direction and severity of rain may mean you have more drops come down than usual.
You could use something like these to cap the chimney

Always had rain drops down the chimneys on my Victorian house, Scarlet... the odd pigeon too....can't think it would be anything to worry about.
Check to see if it's got a cowl on top of it.
If not, have a look at the link that Sandy provided :)

You need air to circulate but also need to keep rain out, so a ventilated cap would be ideal to keep out nesting birds and rainwater
Hi Scarlett. I've had a look at the photo of the back of your house (assuming it's the one you're referring to.)

It looks as though the chimneys are topped off with vents, or possibly rain hoods. You should get very little water in through these.

Typically Victorian, the stacks are quite tall. You're very near the sea. The brickwork is likely to be very porous by now. With the weather we've had lately, it's probably just a little water penetration.

Keep an eye on it to see if it gets any worse; though it's unlikely.
.... where's this photo ???
*Curious*
Didn't mean to be cryptic, Giz. Scarlett sent me a pic of the back of her house a while ago, on a different problem.
Aaaah .....
*case solved* :)
