What is teh best way to get rid of old varnish.
Just bought an old chair, and it needs teh varnish removed before I can start again

Well there may be chemicals that'll do the job, but I think I'd sand it were I in your shoes. I'd avoid a blow torch because of the risk of scorching the wood. Used one once to remove paint from a door, found it too fiddly to avoid problems.
I found (by complete accident) that nail varnish remover on cotton wool removes varnish from wooden furniture very well :o/

nail varnish seems to be remarkable stuff. Removes the adhesive from sticky labels attached to glasses etc. as well!
I'll try that.
NO WAY would I go near a blow torch!
There is no definite answer. It depends how much varnish, what type of varnish and what the wood is.
