stripping varnish from wood around a miror

I had a nice mirror made with a very unusual wooden surround. However, the guy varnished the wood..and I hate shiny varnish. How can I remove the varnish without harming the mirror? I cannot tape it off as the natural curves of the wood and the knots were left in tact.
