Will my Gardenia dye inside my office? There is no sunlight (no windows) in my office, but I finally had to break down and put a plant in here to liven things up! It's a 4 inch, small plant, which I have potted with care and will water when needed...I hope it doesn't dye!

This website suggests that you can get a yellow dye from Gardenias.

And this one suggests that geniposide from gardenia can be reduced to the colorless aglycone genipin which, in turn can be transformed into a blue color, used as a dye, by simple chemical transformation using methylamine.

So, yes, it is possible that your Gardenia could dye.

haha....I'll hand it to you on that one gen2....boy, one mistake in your text on here and you're hounded for it huh??

So, make that "die" please!!

Yes, I think it probably will die.  The level of lighting needed for humans to work in is less than the level needed for most plants to thrive.  Nurseries that use artificial lights to extend daylight so that plants flower earlier use much brighter lamps than office lighting.  You might get away with shade loving plants like ferns - but then most shade plants expect higher levels of humidity than an office environment has.

Have you considered artificial plants?  Many of them are very realistic these days and as long as you change them from time to time so they are not 'flowering' out of season, then most people will never spot the difference from a distance.

Sorry about my first reply, but I didn't want to be accused of not answering the question!
