shalom
There is a great David Frye comedy sketch in iTunes which you gotta hear in which President Richard Nixon is briefed on Mrs Golda Meir coming to see him as new boss in Israeli politics.
He is told 'shalom' is both hello and goodbye.
How do I know which is which, asks Nixon.
You've said goodbye if she leaves after you've said it, his brief tells him.
Mrs Meir leaves, promptly, after she enters.
Nice question, but not an easy one to answer. My knowledge of European history is not that great, as I come from France.
It started with the Romans with " Hail Caesar ". Which was a very polite greeting to the Emperor. This is no way bore any similarity to those sleety balls of ice.
Over many centuries it remained the same word " Hail".
During the rise of the Third Reich, Hitler's mother christened him Heil. As you can clearly see this was a ************** of the old Roman word " Hail ". This was not spotted at the time!!!
So that's how Hitler became to be known as " Heil Hitler " which in an ironic way means " Hello Hitler, in a polite way ".
Hope this helps.
oh my you got one star just coz ur french !
