Or was it the last of the milestones of his career, designed to take revenge on Britain for the extremely late landing in Normandy?

I think the answer lies in De Gaulles own head.  He was vehemently anti British and was still bearing a big grudge from the time Churchill 'grounded' him in London. He was a massively nationalistic Frenchman.

Whatever the reason, it was a patently daft decision.

He never forgave us for saving France's April.

.....twice!

Aye, if it hadn't been for us France would just be known to the world as Land F

He was a dedicated Patriot (you know, the thing much admired amongst Ab's Little Englanders)

what are yoou doing this for? - the last milestone of his careet was either his death or the Quebec trip or les evenements de 1968.

Echo the others here: he could not forgive the Americans for liberating la Belle France. I thought this was anti froggy hype until I saw his Paris libere speech

he really thinks against fact that he has liberated France personally

He thought NATO was too anglo-american probably.

I have no idea what WIlson snti-social inner policy was- - and I lived through it !

Would I be justified in calling for nurse again or am I paranoid?

Anyway de Gaulle did NOT withdraw France from NATO of course: just withdrew France from its military command structure

well I can tell you they thought he had at the time !

I wondered if this were a bot or a student just too idle to read the odd biog - I am not sure I cd stick 500 pages on de Gaulle - there are some very cheap one on Amazon - no I am not tempted.

Still, stands head and shoulders above Boris, Cameron, Major, Biden, Trump,

oh or land F

( D Day landings were NOT late - altho demanded much earlier by Stalin. I see the ref to F whose base is eastern europe)
