Was there a international stores in Alum Rock Birmingham UK I was told that my late mother had worked there back in the early 1970s

Thee certainly used to be a grocery chain called "International Stores" in the UK in the 1970s. I don't know if there was a branch in Birmingham (I've never lived in the Midlands) but there's other stores here:

We had an Internationals in Norbury, South London, but can't remember much about it as I was very young. Couldn't find it on bhg's link though. It was turned into a Sainsburys in the late 70s.

Yes there was. If I remember correctly it was opposite the indoor market

It might be worth contacting Birmingham City Archives, to see if they can help you. (They night, for example, have kept phone directories from the period, enabling them to simply look up 'International Stores' to see if there was a branch listed in Alum Rock):
