Because someone counted wrong.

Also because there was a "Henry the young King" who co-reigned with one or other of Henry II or Henry III.
henry vi was crowned twice?
Did someone called Henry take a different regnal name?
I think Jim is on the money.

The young king was crowned whilst his dad was still alive but then predeceased his father.

Jim has it right here ! Actually it was Henry 2nd. But I have been somewhat hazy over why him and his son should have reigned at the same time. The wiki entry isn't very helpful ::

I think the simple explanation is the correct one: they just did things differently back then.
Oh !

this came up in a different form - who was crowned during his father's life time...

thanks - I did wonder.....
I don't think this adds much but

//While history records that the last King to be crowned King Henry held the title of Henry VIII, it cannot completely ignore the fact that there was another King Henry was was crowned, twice, in 1170 and 1172.

The Henry in question was the second son of Henry II, and after the death of his elder brother he was heir to the throne. In 1170 he was crowned and given the seal "HENRICVS REX ANGLORUM ET DUX NORMANNORUM ET COMES ANDEGAVORUM" and became King Henry of England, alongside his dad, though without realms or power.

He had a second coronation in 1172 because his wife, the daughter of the French King Louis VII, was not in the first one and King Louis was a bit miffed.

Lack of real power, and probable influence from his mother, led Henry the younger to side with his brothers against his father in the short civil war that followed, but after this rebellion was quashed he spent some time competing in jousting tournaments before turning his attentions on his brother Richard (later to become Richard I). During the war with Richard, Henry contracted dysentery and died a few days later.

When he heard his son was dead, Henry II said "He cost me much, but I wish he had lived to cost me more."//
This is actually among the things I genuinely learned through AB -- at some point recently it came up as a quiz question on the Chase, perhaps, and "gollob" pointed out that the given answer, eight, was wrong. I looked it up and, sure enough, there was a ninth. Stuck in my head ever since.

Thanks Mamy ! But I am still unsure why the son was crowned, while his Dad was still alive. I am thinking that it might have something to do with the kingdom not being just England, but parts of France as well. Perhaps his Dad needed a foreman to help out !
In Alternative History there is a King Henry 1X listed.

Mamy...as Alice said, curiouser and curiouser !
I know!!
People couldn't count properly then.?
Cardinal Henry Benedict Stuart, brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie, was recognised by loyal Jacobites as King Henry IX, although he never claimed, nor renounced the throne. He used the title Cardinal, Duke of York instead.
