What a brilliant question Sandy.
I don't really know sandy but I'd imagine it was quite a complex situation as the mine owner did not actually "own" the coal. The coal belong to the land owner who received royalties from the mine owner.
Sandy, why not ask the real experts?

I will e-mail and ask. I'll maybe tone the question down a bit.
I wouldn't worry overly about the tone Sandy. But be fascinated to discover the answer.

I know that the Lowther family in Cumbria received a royalty for every ton extracted from the Workington and Whitehaven seams......how much specifically I do not know, but this should start you in the right direction, sandy.
