On Who Do You Think You Are you often see one of the subjects paying for a researcher to produce a large chart/ family tree for them.
Does anyone know how much, roughly, these cost? I appreciate that there would be a sliding scale depending on how much information you were able to supply, but how much are we talking about?

I suspect there would be a sliding scale depending on how quickly/easily the information was to obtain, and how far back you wanted to go. Probably pay to do your own basic research first then approach those with the time/expertise to check local church records and other less easily available records.

Many thanks to both of you.
A friend used them surname Smith or Brown and
they were very good/accurate about the time spent
but didnt find much.

The trouble about Smith in Liverpool is that there isnt a sense of "nearness".

Once you have got to the end of your information - I have found that one has to wait for new info - which you know, comes at random and unexpected times. - and not from employed searchers

basically I havent found them much good
I did all my own research and put it on to an Excel document, and then had Prontaprint print or for me, it cost £30 to print. It was quite a big document, about 1.5m long.

Or if you are doing your own research you could use software like Family Tree Maker to compile your family tree. I've not used it myself but I believe you can save it as a large PDF doc and take it to the printers to be printed as one large document.
A genealogist and a record agent (professional researcher) is not likely to also be a producer of pedigree charts, they would more likely have a contact they use for such things. There is also a difference between a hand drawn pedigree chart and a software produced pedigree chart. The hand drawn tree would be more expensive as it involves more time and talent. It also would depend on whether you just want a direct descent tree or whether you want to include siblings at some or all levels. Once you have established the various options it would be wise to also ask about storage or presentation as it's no good having a huge rolled up chart of noone is going to see it, If it is a software produced tree it should be easy to also publish a small version for framing and hanging. There are several genealogy packages that include pedigree charts to make on your own PC but ancestry.co.uk have the MyCanvas section which not only produces charts it also can be used to publish complete books of your pedigrees.

Thanks to one and all.
I googled family tree templates and printed a blank one off and then got it enlarged to A3. Filled it in by hand and had it framed. looks quite good. worth a try at only £1.50 to enlarge it in colour at the local library
