I noticed that the water seemed to be draining from the bathroom sink at slower rate than usual, over the last few days.

I removed the U bend section and cleaned it out, but that hasn't made a lot of difference, so I'm guessing that the problem must be lower down.

The water from the toilet and shower is draining as normal.

So whats the best way to clear the blockage ? I don't have a plunger yet.

You've removed the p-trap (so called here in the U.S.) but have you removed and cleaned the gunk from the plug. I'm assiming you have one of the lift rod type plugs. If you have an older rubber plug attached to a chain then disregard. If it's like this (or similar)...

mr muscle plug hole unblocker
You can buy a liquid for this purpose...have used it in the past but can't remember what it's called....the staff at b & q will know....could be a build up of grease etc ?
Once the trap is off, you can poke down the pipe run with a length of stiff fencing wire, or a straightened out coat hanger Chippy.

Thank you, Job done!

Clanad, Your assumption was correct, I do have one of the 'Lift rod types'.
I didn't realize that the whole thing just pulls out, to clean out the gunk.
Got a good vortex going now!
Cheers - Chip.
