Are they always this fiddly to peel, or did I not cook them for long enough? Cut a deep X in each one, 10 minutes at 200. The outer shell peels off fine but the inner, brown 'skin' is a pain to remove...

I'd say they weren't vooked enough.
vooked?

COOKED !!!
i love chestnuts, i dont peel them i squeez them and they should crack, and the chestnuts pops out easily!!
We used to cook ours over the fire when we were kids... sad to admit that now I buy them ready-peeled in jars from Tesco.
what a wonderful new verb you have created, Naz....."vook." It is so descriptive of a f-up in the kitchen.

You will enter the Oxford Dictionary hallowed halls and, who knows, a bio film of you in a century's time.
One lives in constant hope, DT ... lol
10 minutes????

The BBC website suggests 30 minutes!!!!

I would have said at least 20, and at least until they're almost on fire.
Pop them in the microwave for a few mins, and they literally pop out of their skins, then you can cook them any way you like ................................note to self must make stuffing!!!
i think it really depends what type of chestnuts you buy...

morrisons suggest 15- 20mins (i think)

tesco's suggests 30mins
i suggest vacuum packed. anything for an easy life..

Thanks everyone... these were from Tesco and it says on the label 'roast at 200 degrees for 8-10 minutes'...

I guess I need to cook them longer...
I did them under the grill in the kitchen one year.
I had carefully forgotten to cut the shells and the shrapnel nearly did for my Mum as she was passing the stove............:o)
waitrose sell frozen ready peeled ones....much better than vaccuum packed, canned or jars
