Roasting Chestnuts

I asked mr thug to buy some ready cooked and peeled chestnuts yesterday, He came home with fresh instead. I followed the instructions and pierced the chestnuts, placed them on a baking sheet and put them in the oven at 200. It took only 10 minutes before the began to explode. I now have to clean the oven before I can cook my Christmas dinner. What did I do wrong?

God knows but it nearly always happens to me as well. Maybe cook them on a lower heat for longer.
If they exploded you did not pierce them sufficiently deeply.

When we used to do it we put a deepish X slit in each one.
next time dont roast them steam them they cook better

Thanks for your replies. I pierced each one at least 3 times. It's happened to me before which was why I asked mr thug to buy ready cooked chestnuts. Sigh. Still, what else would I be doing on Christmas Eve but clean the oven?
i boiled mine last year, thanks to a suggestion on AB, then peeled them and sprinkled in salt. they were lovely.
