Why is it that I can't stand being criticized? As soon as anyone says anything critical I really hurt. I've lost friends over the years because of this. I know some people don't mind it but why is it such a great deal with me?

no one likes to be criticised, but sometimes you have to step back and see if it's justified or constructive.
I think it depends on whether you ask for someones opinion or not. It's more hurtful if you don't.
critiques have low self-esteem and need to pick on others to boost themselves.
I think people who always believe they are right or perfect detest criticisms. I do agree though that some criticisms can be hurtful.
It doesn't bother me at all. If it's justified, I'm grateful for it. If it's not, I just ignore it.
It depends on whether the criticism is constructive or not.

First of all I don't think I'm always right and perfect, society, so that isn't a reason why it hurts. Ummmm, if I ask for someone's opinion, that isn't critisism; it's asking for advice so you're getting what you asked for.
If people tell me I'm too sensitive or too trustworthy I can take that but when somebody criticizes the way I do a thing I just flip. I don't criticize others as I accept people have busy lives so let them get on with them.
As soon as someone comes out with; You don't do this, you don't do that, isn't it strange you do this like that etc I can't stand it and my confidence in that person just flies through the window.
I think it depends on the way in which the comment is offered. I heard on the radio the other day that there is now considered to be no such thing as "constructive criticism", since well-meaning or not, criticism can hurt. However, if it's deserved then I do try to learn from it, I know I could approach some things in life much better than I do. I tend to criticise others from time to time, I know I do (particularly sloppy work or - aargh - people who say pacific instead of specific) but I am far from perfect myself.

Thank you boxtops.
I think it depends on what I'm criticised for, and therefore what my ego regards as my strengths and weaknesses. For example, I know I can be quite lazy sometimes and if I'm pulled up on it I might get a little defensive but deep down I know it's true, but I pride myself on being relatively clever and if anyone criticises my intelligence I really take it to heart. There are lots of things where I know the person has a point but other things make me totally over react.
