Have real peas in the pod gone out of fashion? They only ever appear rarely in the summer and whenever I get to the checkout the sales staff usually don't know what they are and have to shout to a colleague. Do young people know that peas come out of a pod ???

i work in a supermarket and as they arent cheap we dont sell them most of the time. you might find that when staff are shouting to a colleague they are really just asking for a PLU number with which to weight them with.
Hi lady_p_gold,

I used to love sitting with my grandmother shelling peas. It brings back fond memories :-)

Now then, we went to my brother and sister-in-laws for dinner and she served....... peas still in their pods lol..... I couldn't work out what these tough green pods were at first until I opened them and discovered the little peas inside. She had never shelled peas before or knew what they were. The strange thing was her mother was there too.
My SiL is not a brilliant cook at the best of times, with chops that could be used for roofing!!! bless her.
It's her birthday today, she's 38!!! is that still classed as young? how my bro is still alive is always in question lol.....
The reason peas in pods appear in the summer is because it's a seasonal vegetable. Even then they aren't cheap. If you were to get them at this time of year, they would be extortionate. We try to eat fruit and veg thats in season in my house because it tastes better and is of course cheaper.
We get them in the french supermarkets all year long. At the moment they're at 3 (2) a kilo and are from Morocco.
Lady p gold are you saying I`m not fashionable. Shame on you. lol.
LadyP. Wait until they are in season & find a local grocer or Farmers Market. Don't pay over the odds for imported tasteless cr@p. In other words don't buy you veg, or meat for that matter, from a supermarket. shop locally it tastes better.

Thanks for your replies, I have done a mini survey and many younger people do not know how to cook them or that you sit and shell them! In reply to Polly, no they have actually had to call out to ask what they are, and in one instance the checkout youngish lad said 'are you using these as peas?' which I did not quite understand, and I replied, 'yes because they are peas'. Anyway I was shopping in California recently in a well known store and the same thing happened, and when they asked someone what they are they were told they are under 'English peas'. Interesting. I realise they are seasonal but what I meant was they only appear rarely even in the summer. Anyway I shall continue to eat them raw in salads when I can. :)
