Hiya, does anyone have a good recipe for normal homemade coleslaw?

I love the stuff you get if you eat out at places, but find the stuff you buy in small pots at any supermarket has a strong funny taste I don't like.

Thanks!

I just grate carrots white cabbage and onion in a food processor, then mix some of my favourite mayo in. You can also vary it with cream or salad cream depending how you want the taste.

My mum makes the best home made coleslaw (but maybe I'm biased!).

As *********** says, white cabbage, carrots and a little onion then she uses 'real' mayonnaise, fresh mayonnaise (normally the waitrose version) and some sultanas.

Has the most amazing taste!! I make the same way but I use low fat mayo as constantly on a diet!! So get ma's for a special treat!!

Dunno why it starred out - was only the username of the person posted before (perhaps I spelt it wrong).

D'oh. Sorry!

As above - make a up a nice fresh mayo and literally just add grated onion, carrot and white cabbage. A tiny dash of white wine vinegar and the lightest of seasonings whizzed in completes it nicely.

S/market 'slaws tend to have a shed load of extras like sweetners, flavourings and oils that only benefit the additive industry, and can prolong the shelf life and also allow the product to be handeled by mechanical filling and mixing equipment. Once you make your own you'll wonder why you ever tried the mass produced stuff.

If you want a trial at a few different versions, like using fruits, other veg. etc 168 here: http://www.astray.com/recipes/?search=coleslaw or 200 here: http://www.recipezaar.com/r/q=coleslaw

..I like to finely shred my cabbage by hand, ditto the onions, grated carrots, diced apple in a splash of lemon juice, raisins and some salted peanuts, bind together with some mayo thinned down with some natural youghurt, pleanty of pepper... just vary the ratio of ingredients to your taste, I prefer a lot of carrot and onion and only a little cabbage....
..oh and polotoo...the reason the username was edited in your reply was because the last 4 letters of the name is offencive...

Excellent, thanks everyone, think I'll buy some ingredients and get experimenting! yum!

Oh should I change my user name because of the last 4 letters. Political correctness gone mad.

Thanks Ermintrude - I thought my typing had gone really mad! Couldn't work out what I'd done!!

Rocky - I would never have thought of it, I don't know if anyone else would too?

Zip - Spoke to my ma and she said her trick is to not cut the cabbage too finely-needs a bit of substance. And, bit of a result, she sent some over tonight - my hint must have done the trick!!!

Lucky you Polotoo! Enjoy it!

Thanks for letting me know, I'll keep my cabbage chunky!

White cabbage, carrots and a little onion and purple cabbage, mayonnaise, cumin to taste. Best if made the night before - and it will create some of it's own liquid during that time. If it needs thinning the next morning, I just pour some of the liquid from my jar of dill pickles into it.
