They're a good and inexpensive meal, especially when served on whole grain bread, rather than white, as this will be a high fibre diet. However, be careful how you select them as some are high in salt or sugar, so check the labels first and go for a low salt, low sugar variety.

Specifically? : http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/cgi-bin/list_nut_edit.pl for the beans and: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/cgi-bin/list_nut_edit.pl for one slice white bread, toasted.

Ok so links aren't working - probably some hysterical American web security worried that the info if it's seen could lead to an invasion by Cuba or whatever..

Any, eat a lot of them cos they're good.

(And if you want to try the links, put the search term 'baked beans' into new search, and then 'toast' in as another and you get all the breakdown of the products composition an d nutritional values.)

Beans are full of iron, so if you arent a fan of red meat, stock up on beans!
Sorry guys but you have just given this lovely person totally wrong info.Baked bean companies are no longer allowed to say that they count as a portion of your recommended 5 portions of fruit and veg a day as they contain far too much salt and sugar and many of the goodness has gone out of them by the time you eat them.If you do not believe me than next time you go to the supermarket see if they say equals one of your 5 portions of fruit and veg. It will not.
122345 I can say with authority that Heinz baked beans are lower in salt and sugar than previously, due to Heinz taking government guidelines seriously. Their packaging managers ensure that the nutritional information is correct, and the ingredients are sourced from the best suppliers. My brother is a process manager at the Wigan factory. The B brand varieties may be laced with additives, but Heinz beans aren't. Obviously if you overcook or reduce them, then the salt levels will increase. Go ahead and eat them with toast, worth it for the amount of soluble fibre alone.

Ok, buy haricot beans, make Boston beans and adapt the recipe to have no extra salt or sugar.

Ticks all the boxes.

Nutritious and far better than a BigMac, fish supper, takeaway curry/kebab/Chinese etc. It's not a totally balanced meal and I don't mean that the takeaways are bad for you.
You could always go to some recipe nutition calculator website that offers GDA markings per portion. I use alacalc.co.uk (my father in-law has biabetes so we have try to figure out his sugar intake) and it works just great.
