I've recently rediscovered a regular favourite from my youth, a hot sweet mug of Horlicks, so nice on these cold evenings. It has also made me remember Ovaltine & Bournvita. Do they still exist? Does anyone else like Horlicks or any other winter warming milky drink?

Spmeone I know used to put those powders in cakes.  They were really nice!

Going back to Hopkirk yes I seem to remember it was a bit of a faff to make with proper milk but that was before microwaves and boiling milk in a saucepan not only takes time but the pan is then really hard to clean.. I just mix the powder with a little milk to a paste in the mug, fill with milk and put in the microwave (watched) for a couple minutes. Stir, add sugar and done.

It used to get little chewy bits sitting on the top of the milk which didn't dissolve, they were my favourite bits. I never added sugar to it, isn't it already sweetened?

Does it help you sleep, Prudie? I sometimes have the instant one you mix with boiling water. Not the same.

I simply hate milky drinks Vagus hot or cold but love the taste of horlicks.  As a kid I used to but Horlicks tablets in the chemist rather than sweets.  I don't think Horlicks tablets exist any more.

As kids, we were treated to a mug of Horlicks about once a week when mum took us shopping. We called into a coffee bar next to the bus station. The Horlicks powder was put into a metal container along with hot milk. The whole thing was then put under a milk frother like they use for cappuccinos and steam heated before being poured into a special mug that had what looked like a sticking out ear, instead of a traditional handle. Happy days, sadly long gone.

Blubster yes I regularly chose it in cafes when I was young, always used to be an option back then and came in a branded thick white mug with that solid handle. I know it's supposed to be a bedtime drink but I am having when I get in from work, it's freezing as the CH has not been on for long and it warms me up, it's also so comforting. I assume I love malt hence the Malteser passion.

You've all made me want some now and I haven't had any for years.

Waitrose have it on offer, Original 400g £3.25 and Instant 400g £3.25.  Which is the nicest please?

I think LB the general view is the original is thick and delicious, more of a deal to make and fattening

The instant is watery and a poor example but probably healthier and easier to make. (I wouldn't touch it).

Thanks Prudie I'll get the fattening one and just have it once a week.  Well, I'll try to have it only once a week and not put too many spoonfuls in the mug.

Has nobody mentioned Milo? Still available in some stores.

I used to love codliver and malt as a child!

OMG my mother used to make me take cod liver in those brown capsules. One day at school my friend dared me to bite into it, I retched for hours, I can still recall that disgusting taste now.

I do not mind the taste of cod liver oil, but cod liver oil with malt just makes me gip

Same with me Prudie - those small spherical cod liver oil capsules used to be administered on a teaspoon of sugar. I tried biting one, and the taste was vile. Put me right off CLO for donkey's years. Much preferred Virol - cod liver oil mixed with malt and bone marrow to prevent rickets...

Milo had the image of baby milo being given a calf to carry and as he grew the calf grew and when he was a grown man he could carry a whole cow.

Ok prudie, I've now added a jar of the original to my click and collect 😋

I loved cod liver oil and malt, so sticky and delicious, wonder if I can buy that somewhere too 🤔

My mother gave us cod liver oil with a spoon - held your nose and in it went. Yeuk! 😵
