I want my boiled eggs so they have runny yolk but completely set whites
How long would people recommend? In cold water to begin with or into boiling water?

Boiling water for 6 minutes.
In cold water, just enough to barely cover the eggs. Once they come to the boil then 3 minutes.
I'll ask Mrs sqad...that is exactly how I like mine.
"that it exactly how I like mine"...but I've no idea how they're done.
Size of the egg makes a difference to timing.

I read something that said you need to do it for less time on gas; more on induction
^^well, no matter what the fuel, water boils at the same temperature.

These work.
I use cold water, boiling is more likely to crack the egg when it goes into the water.
I eat one egg a day, always a large size, and have never had any problem with lowering it into boiling water for 6 minutes,
I've never bolied an egg but my chef (Mr BD) says start it in cold water and once it starts to boil turn it down to a simmer for 4 minutes. We always use large eggs but don't know if that makes any difference.
Mrs sqad agrees with Danny13.
I have never boiled an egg and don't intend to.
I keep mine in the fridge. Maybe that’s why they crack easier when put in boiling water.

If you keep your eggs in the fridge, make sure they are at room temperature before you boil them.Large eggs take about a minute longer than medium eggs. Personally I gently lower them into boiling water and boil for 6 - 7 mins. If you like them runnier than this, boil for a minute less.
I agree with Danny, maybe 7 minutes for me. ( hate runny whites) . Sqad..... * I’ve never boiled an egg in my life * lol.
You do 6 at a time and remove them from the water at 30 second intervals. Sling the 5 you don't like.
I put large eggs in already simmering water for four/half minutes also I prick the bottom through the shell (Big-ender) before hand so they don't crack.

I agree with Bigbad
Just how you want them everytime
start of with cold water, then about 6 mins for firm whites and runny yolk. then the soldiers will come marching on LOL
in cold water to start with some salt, stops the shell from breaking. come to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes, never fails.
