Bronze!
Had a Norfolk Black one xmas and it was nothing to rave about.
Question Author
The butcher has offered me bronze or white, and I said white, but perhaps I should change to bronze.
I have never had a White. It may be better. Turkeys are a matter of taste. Try it. Which one costs more??
I remember when only the rich could afford turkey and the poor had to make do with goose. Now the roles are reversed. Turkey these days is tasteless muck; Bernard Matthews has a lot to answer for.
Really?

I can't afford a Bronze Turkey even if I wanted one, have gone for a large joint of beef.
I've only bought a turkey crown for Xmas. I'm not a big fan especially when you see the price of them outside of the Xmas period.
I know Mamya, the one I had was enough for 6 people and can remember paying over 60 quid!
Very sensible, Mamya. I don't know whether to go for beef, pork or lamb but no poultry, apart from maybe duck, if I only knew how to cook it.
Jack...get Duck breasts. Very easy to cook.
Lol...this new kindle knows swear words. It changed duck to a word beginning with F :-)

Thank you all for your advice. Kids all insist it has to be turkey at Christmas and we normally have a crown. I would love to have beef which is a real treat for us.

Apart from the colour (I assume) I didn't now the difference so I did a search.

"The bronze turkey is the original and traditional turkey. The Bronze turkey being an older breed, is naturally slower growing and the meat has an intense flavour. As the popularity of turkeys grew, white breeds were introduced to present as 'oven ready'. They have a more subtle yet still delicious flavour."

Right, so it looks as if white is to be avoided then.
I don't understand the popularity of crowns. Buying most of the bird but with the best bit stolen to be sold elsewhere. Madness.
Tell the kids that when they pay for the food they can choose it (that's what my mother did!)....and go for beef or (my fave at Christmas) pork.
If you prefer the leg meat then the popularity of a Crown won't be apparent to you.
Maybe the washing up is easier.
They say crowns with no bones can be drier than legs.
Crowns should be on the bones. We don't like the legs except for casseroles and curries and we buy turkey legs very cheaply for that purpose.
I cook a turkey crown and rib of beef on Christmas day. New Year's Day is usually a M&S boned and stuffed duck and a gammon joint.
I remember living off turkey for a fortnight. Roast turkey Xmas Day, cold turkey and pickles Boxing Day, turkey sandwiches at every opportunity then eventually my mother would boil the carcass to make turkey broth.
I'm going to the in laws so I'll be having over cooked Turkey and over boiled bacon served with over cooked veg.

I don't mind. We eat well the rest of the year :-)
