I'm having trouble getting hold of a fresh turkey for this weekend, so I've decided to go down the frozen route - as much as I don't want to.

How long will it take to thaw out a frozen turkey which is 5.405Kg - 7.2Kg, and how do I do this? Room temperature or fridge?

Also, how long to cook this?

Thanks.

I never buy frozen, but I'd say at least 24-36 hours in a cool place. Here are some very precise cooking guidelines- http://www.cooksleys.com/Turkey_Cooking_Times.htm

http://www.christmas-turkey.com/frozen-turkey-defrost.php this is an indication of how long it takes to defrost. A turkey around 6kg probably takes four and a half to five hours to cook. I'm voting for chicken this year, at least i know what i'm doing!
You can always search the internet for this sort of thing you know.

You can use either room or fridge. Fridge will take longer.

It can take many many hours to deforst a turkey.

This web site says 3 or 4 hours PER KG at room temperature.

Five hours?!!! Whaaaaaaat?! Oh jeez. Ok... er...
I usually go with the fresh turkey crowns. They're so easy, and tell you on the packet how long they take. Might have to re-think this.

VHG, yeah, I'm fully aware of how the internet works, thanks very much. I prefer AB, though, as I can't be arsed searching through different websites, and would like someone to just say "this is how long it takes to defrost, and this is how long it will take to cook" :-)

Oh really? Doh! (me, not you) :-)
Do you need a whole turkey? They were selling turkey crowns fresh in Morrisons yesterday, that and some leg joints.

Hi Box. No, I don't need a whole turkey, I'd much rather a fresh turkey crown.
However, my local Tesco's have said they're not getting any in until the 22nd. I will give Morrisons a call in the morn. Ta :-)
Anybody who buys a turkey crown are rather silly. That is because they are paying as much for a crown say weighing 5 kilos as a 7 kilo turkey. So buying a whole turkey means you get 2 kilos for nothing. Crowns are a great con.
