Can I cheat and use a tin of chopped tomatoes/plum tomatoes? My recipe says to roast 8 really ripe tomatoes. Could I substitute a tin instead.......no skins to faff about with.

Would it work?

Perfectly I would think.
Yes, it would be OK...perhaps the result wouldn't have the same depth of flavour, though.
Maybe add a wee scoot of tomato puree too.

Thanks Canary. I just wondered if it would be too 'strong' a tomato taste.
I'm new to this soup making lark.

Thanks, ginge and maggie, too.

Tomato puree would help, I think.
Nah don't you'll hate yourself in the morning go for the real thing

My tomatoes aren't ripe enough, Weecalf!
I roast the tomatoes with crushed garlic, add stock then blitz - season of course.

I often add red peppers or even chopped chillies too.

I have bought a soup maker, Mamya and I'm trying to cheat! I just want to bung everything in and leave it. I wasn't really prepared for having to cook things first.

The red pepper and chillies may come later.

No, Sibs. Too much sugar! Scratch cooking, I am.
Oh I see sorry.
Pasatta would be better as the bitter seeds will have been removed.
^^^ tssk, passata.
If your going to faff around with substitute tilly, why bother, wait until your tomatoes are ripe and roast them, it is definitely worth the effort, of course you can substitute, I love one pot cooking but I find that roasting the veg first gives them a lovely flavour, why not place your tomatoes beside a few bananas, I don't know what it is about bananas, they ripen everything to a pulp overnight. I use passata in a lot of my tomatoe based meals.
I'm sure it'll make a soup. Whether it is to your taste is in the eating. "Cheat" this time, try another not "cheating" next time. Tell us the result ?
Should work well
Bananas give off ethylene which ripen fruits nearby. Other fruits do too, not just bananas.
Why a soupmaker?
Some of the 'fruits' on AB exude a fast ripening gas as well geezer.
