The threads concerning...." what are you eating tonight?"..."what are your drinking?" always, or almost always, includes the date of bottling e.g 2014 etc.
The wines described are invariably "Bog standard " wines, so what difference does the bottling date matter?

"Showing off?"...."Pretentiousness?"....or perhaps both?

I prefer the Ibu Pro Fen 2015 - hand trodden by the vintner in Menorca ... a tad presumptuous but still quite perky for its age .....

I suppose it's because someone has (apparently) shown some interest in what others are doing, so the 'others' give them all the information that will satisfy that interest.
I suppose there could be a few reasons - maybe to distinguish it from another year when that wine wasn't on form?

I don't read the small print, just open and pour.
Maybe because the fact that the year is on the bottle means the wine is vintage and some people think vintage means Posh.

mamy....."bog standard wine" is "bog standard" whether it is 2014 or 2002.

Nah!...........pretentiousness.
I always fly first class, usually after a glass or two of my bog standard wine.
Don't think anyone would ever be interested in my chicken salad and cup of tea lol. Allergic to alcohol so what you've never had you don't miss as they say.
Yeah well my Casillero del Diablo is a 2013 vintage so ...ner!
Casillero Del Diablo Carmenere is really nice.
I just look at the percentage :-)

My Mother told of a lady she worked with in the mill, always swanking.

One morning she arrived flapping and looking wan, when asked - she said 'Oh I feel awful, I think it was the Veuve Clicquot' - quick as a shot Mum replied 'You shouldn't come to work if you have a tropical disease, we'll all catch it'.
I find everything about wine pretentious - hints of blackberry, a touch of cherry and a nod to the smoky flavour of plums coated in chocolate shavings roasted over oak leaves. But that's probably because it doesn't do much for me except make me sleepy.

I much prefer a single malted scotch to a double malted milk shake.

A little story for you:

We never had wine at home and i was first introduced to it at Med School.

The first year I attended the Hockey Club dinner and sat next to Prof Francis Camps, the Home Office pathologist who was involved in the 10 Rillington Place murders. I had swatted up on my wines and guided the conversation to that subject. Prof Camps asked me which wine i preferred and i replied authoritatively................Blue Nun . Sir!........................LOL..LOL

When he got home i would have presumed that when his wife said "Have you had a good time darling", he would have relied "I sat next to this t1t who told me that his favourite wine was "Blue Nun"........LOL.......LOL
