Iceburg lettuce! Does anyone wash this, I do, but it's a pet hate of mine, I despise the salad spinner as well. A restaurant near me serves wedges of iceburg with their meals, surely these haven't been washed, it would be too difficult wouldn't it?

I've never seen a TV chef wash lettuce.
I have never washed an iceberg lettuce. I take off the outer leaves and rip apart the rest (never cut with a knife).

You're right ummm, don't think I have either. I don't mind washing Cos as it can just sit in the colander for and hour but the other stuff, urgh, drives me mad.
Iceberg (my fav) is tight, like a cabbage. I check other lettuce varieties.

Thanks Maggie, I've heard that before about using knives, I think you can buy plastic ones for cutting them, sure I had one years ago.
i rinse it then give it a right shake ....i couldnt eat it if i didnt wash it
I never wash lettuce .Most of them are grown in hothouses these days .You rarely see a slug on a lettuce these days .I pick it over and brush off any suspect black bits which are only earth anyway .
You have to eat a bucket of muck before you die as my old Mum used to say :)
I don't like iceberg lettuce and I buy mine already washed in a little bag :o)

It's not the bugs that bother me really, it's more about washing off pesticides. I suppose with the iceburg, the chemicals wouldn't penetrate the inside.
I doubt they use pesticides much rocky .It's a quick growing crop with a high turnover .
Saint Delia doesn't wash hers either :)

Delia's hands give me the creeps so i can't make her recipes without thinking about them and it puts me off the food.
Question Author
Thanks all, I'm officially not washing iceburgs anymore.
Do you believe Delia wipes every lettuce leaf with kitchen roll. I find the easiest way is to rinse it,put it in a tea towel and shake it outside.
I hate washing lettuce too-and grating cheese!
and I hate grating lemon rind
Question Author
Oh yes crisgal, cheese grating, another argh! I tried to get the kids to do that, it didn't end well.
I buy lettuce in a bag, ready washed, and cheese which is grated!.............sorted!..............
Question Author
I find that grated cheese goes off a bit quick, don't you welshy. I buy the luttuce in a bag sometimes but it's usually baby spinach or watercress, the main lettuce I usually buy whole (and wash, argh)
rockyracoon, yes grated cheese needs to be used quickly, and as long as you do, it's fine, and as for washing lettuce, I will never do it!.......I use the washed bagged stuff!............lol.................
I buy grated cheese too .It's good if you're making cheese sauce .I'm a lazy mare . Lol ....I buy bags of chopped veg and diced swede and carrot too ..Mind you I have arthritics in the hands and find all this chopping and peeling too much of a chore these days .
