When someone says their cholesterol is say 5 what does this mean? Their total cholesterol, their ratio HDL, their LDL, what? When I go for a blood test I get back the results of all these and also my HDL.

That will be the total cholesterol........they should also give you the figures for HDL and LDL.....High Density Lipoprotein (good stuff) and Low Density Lipoprotein (bad stuff)
5 is good, coccinelle.

Thank you to you both. Actually, sqad says it's the total cholesterol but that's not my total reading. My total is 7.43; however, my HDL is very high so this doesn't concern the doctors. I am eating differently to get the LDL down.
