I realise Alex Ferguson is a great manager etc but did you ever hear such a fuss about his retirement. He is a wealthy man and will even be wealthier, loads of people retire after 30 or 40 years hard grafting without any recognition maybe a clock or a watch. It's a good job the Pope's vacancy has been filled or Alex would have been in the running.

So the retirement of the most succesful fottball manager of all time doesn't merit a bit of press coverage?
I thought he was a Protestant?
Sir Alex, not the Pope!
There's a world of difference between great and greatest in the history of the game, hence the coverage.
the only thing wrong with retirement is that you never get a day off ....
Yes but lead item on the BBC news (lunch and 6pm) and eleven minutes coverage ahead of the Opening of Parliament which got 7 minutes is somewhat imbalanced. What percentage of the UK population support Man U (5%? - that's 3 million out of 60)? He should have been recognised but not so prominently.
Totally agree with you Cari. He's just a man after all, BUT because bloody football is involved, he becomes a God !!!!
Has there been a fuss ? Only seen it mentioned on here.

I don't think it would matter what his religion was according to the news he could do anything.
Well I've sent him a card................
Does his successor really believe that Sir Alex won't be in the dressing room at half time? Does anyone think Sir Alex won't be spouting off at the match officials?
I've said it before - God the Messi, God the Senna and God the Ferguson
What a trinity

As for the news - it cant be on enough for me - I find myself logging on all the time just waiting for snippets - I bit like a few weeks ago when we saw white smoke

The end of an era :-( So sad to see him go.

I of course meant the pope - but yours might be better

I do recall the name, he was the chap who kicked a boot at some young lad called , Beckham I think it was.

Not sure your sums add up there, you're assuming every person in the UK is a football fan
