one of the previous editors did give a figure - I can't remember it or find it but it was thousands. But the figure would include people who arrived to ask for one crossword solution and then vanished forever, anytime since 2000 or so when the site launched. Technically they're still here and you can't reuse their usernames. They may be off reading the newsletter somewhere.
