Some lines ban bikes on certain services, usually during rush hour.

Seems a bit grumpy of them.
I don't see why it's grumpy, they take up a lot of room and if you have a bike during comuting hours then I do think either get on it or leave it at home. The trains are crowded enough without this extra inconsideration.

Thanks, China.

It's a bit of a cycle from Brighton to London, though (plus, it's uphill !)
With no Guard's Vans on Commuter Trains these days it would cause a problem, unlke Years ago when you could take just about anything with you inluding your Horse and shove it in there.
You would have to contact the Train Operator JJ and take the matter up with them
There's a limited amount of bikes allowed, it's best to find out beforehand. My son booked for himself + bike but that was up north. You could give this number a ring

I usually stick the bike in the back of the car and park in Marylebone.

Ya, well what if it had pooped ???
Yes you can take bikes on trains. I`ve done that with two friends. We had to stand by the doors and I must admit I did think it was dangerous. If anything happened, we were blocking the exits. If you look at Southern Railway`s website their cycle policy is there. It looks like you can`t do it from 0700 to 1000, and 1600 to 1900 hours.
you usually have to label your bike as well with journey details - usually just where to/from is enough.

You can check on the national rail site which services allow bikes. I often cycle the South Down as far as Shoreham and train it back.
quick solution, get yourself a brompton or a cheaper folding bike eg dahou.

Usually best to call ahead to "book" it.

There's a shorter version of redman's link.

Depends on the train used. The smaller commuter trains (Certainly where I live) have seats that fold up (To make space for bikes and Buggies etc.) and spaces at the end of carriages to keep bikes in. Not too sure about trains between Brighton and London though.
