Requests for bank sort code information come up regularly. Could someone tell me why? It's not something I've ever wanted to find out.

The sort code relates to the bank branch where your account is held. Every bank branch a unique sort code.

Not so nobfelt - several bank branches can share one sort code. And some banks have just one sort code - their branches don't have codes.

As to why people want to know - pass. It's very easy to find out online anyway - they don't need to post here.

Maybe they've bought something on e-bay and are going to do a bank transfer to pay for it and want to check the bank is somewhere near the place they are going to post the item to.

Yes Im sick of seeing bank sort codes, much easier if people just ring the bank!!! or we could put an AB sugegestion for a new website called sortcodebank.co.uk
