Yeah, do tell!
Because I am curious too!!!

Unless I'm being really stupid I can't think of any reason why you would need to know it lol
I've been wanted to ask this for EVER!
It is useful to know if you sell on eBay and you accept cheques.

If you suspect the buyer of using fraudulent cheques, then checking that the branch is fairly local to the buyer's given address is a handy tool.

Hi Ethel, I usually bow to your knowledge but I DJ'd for a mate on Sunday he payed by cheque, he lives in Brum and his "branch is in Lancaster (where he went to Uni).

I accept cheques on Ebay and when it clears I send the goods out.

So still waiting for a valid reason lol

When doing internet banking, you have the facility of doing a money transfer to another bank account.

If you only know the sort code and NOT the actual Bank, then people may ask because if its a different Bank to yours, then the money would take longer to transfer.

If it is the same bank as yours then it is transferred in a quicker time

Hope this helps

Jimmy - What happened to you in Rotterdam 82??? lol

As regards to transfering money, why don't you just ask the person what the branch was at the same time you were getting the sort code???
banks of the same company have the same first 2 digits so that is not the reason Jimmy.
may be they have a really interesting hobby , like train spotting,

and they collect sort code numbers
Reverandfund - like your mate my bank branch is where I used to live. I'm sure it confuses some people. Especially as I've moved twice since then!
The e-bay 'needing to know if the cheque is local ' explanation doesn't wash.

All cheques have the branch location printed on them, and all but Barclays have its address as well. Except those with only an HQ.

Still no further forward then lol!!
A lot of people come on here as a form of chat. The actual question(!) is totally irrelevant - they just want to pass the time.

I know that but asking about bank sort codes?? lol

Whatever next, the cooking time for a small chicken?
Can anybody tell me the cooking time for a small chicken then? Wow, what a site !!!!
I've said this before - these people have a hobby similar to trainspotting. They loiter around cashpoint machines collecting discarded bits of paper with different sort codes on for their collection. They always wear jamjar specs, shell suits with the bottoms tucked into their socks, have greasy hair and usually some arresting physical defect. Many have a talent for drooling and pointing at things in the sky. They're completely harmless and eventually move on to other hobbies such as collecting bus tickets or rootling about in skips or bins. If you want to wind one up, next time they ask questions on here, give em a spoof answer, such as "that sort code belongs to Coutts Bank, Buckingham Palace branch." It will send them into a frenzy.
i totaly agree, or tell them something like that sort code is very private 'where did you get that number from'

its used by the royals via coutts bank etc etc
It baffles me as well, and as I have mentioned many times before, they NEVER say thanks, they never explain why they need the answer (with one noteable exception) and they almost always have green user names. Can I suggest we stop answering them? It just encourages them!!!
Sorry about that. Here is a link to the "noteable exception" who did explain his reasons, and conveyed a thank you (even if it was prompted)
