You would have to offer a free trial period, then users would just re subscribe with different email etc. and this would not stop spammers. Personally, I would expect a lot more content on the site than there is at the moment to warrant a subscription.
I had always said I was willing to pay a small subscription. I've also twice been about to make a donation - but here's the thing to ponder - I didn't donate in the end because by pure chance at both times I was 'spoken' to so rudely and obnoxiously by 2 or 3 regular members that I stopped posting for several months. I could still name them.
People will be pretty peed if they pay a subscrition and then get insulted. Both thick skin and money now required?
Employ or aquire a good content creator, offer temporory internships to media students, make the site more current with articles linked to reader offers and yes, advertising, but good advertising that does'nt empede on the enjoyment of the site. Research what people want, then offer it. When you are getting more views and engagemant then think about a subscription.
I used to be very fond of Answerbank once upon a time, but now it's the same old boring regurgitated rubbish in the news section from certain posters. To me it's an absolute borefest and something I probably wouldn't want to pay for. If we could get it back to how it was, I'd probably pay.
I suppose it also depends on what the subscription would be. Small is subjective.
