Does anyone know how far in advance you should apply for it

Isn't it automatic?
You don't. They contact you.
Not Automatic, when you reach state pension age they will send you a letter advising you how to claim. If you ignore it, your pension will be deferred until you do. It will be earning interest in the meantime.

I see it's changed since I claimed mine. Ubasses is correct.

ubasses is pretty well always right
You can claim up to 3 months in advance.

I assume your getting it at 66 and your comparing to when women's got there's at 60.
You should get a letter inviting you to apply, if not 3 months before.
