Car Tax (Via Direct Debit) Changes

I have a question that I'm hoping someone here can answer.

My Dad has just retired and treated himself to a new car. He is currently paying tax on his old car via direct debit, is it somehow possible to change the direct debit to pay the tax on the new car. And if so, how? What stages do we have to go through to change it from one car to the other.

Many thanks in advance!

Each car will be treated separately.

As soon as the old car is registered to someone else, the tax arrangement on that will cease.

He needs to set up a payment method to tax the new car from the moment he owns it.
We tax 5 cars and pay by DD. Each cars payment goes out separately and their reg number appears on the bank statements (this is work, I don't actually have 5 cars personally)
When he sells or disposes of the old car the tax on it ceases to be valid. He must apply for a refund for the whole months left and the new owner must tax it from the first day of the month he acquires it.

similarly your Dad must tax the new car from the first day of the month he acquires it.
New Judge is correct that any whole months of tax paid on the old car are refunded.

However these do not have to be applied for - a cheque should be issued automatically.
In October I scrapped my car and purchased another one. I was paying by direct debit on the scrapped one and the payment was due in the 1 st of the month. I scrapped it on 30/10/2015 and the new car was taxed until 31/10/2015. My payment for the scrapped car was taken from my bank on 01/11/15 and I used the online system to purchase new tax for the new car. Within 10 days my payment for the scrapped car was returned to my bank as the correct documentation was received by the DVLA. Just get your dad to buy new tax and the DVLA will sort the old one if they receive the correct documents.
just tax the new car by DD and the DD for the other one will get cancelled when that car is sold.
