Does anyone know the proportion of cash to card sales nowadays ? Low I bet, especially in supermarkets. I am prompted to ask because I have just seen someone pay 1.40 for sandwiches in a supermarket - by plastic. No wonder the queues get so long.

What is the smallest or daftest transaction anyone has seen put on plastic ?

I was in B&Q once and the person in front paid 60p with a card!
I think part of the blame has to be the cashpoints which charge you 1.50/transaction!  Much easier to pay by switch and get 50 out for free.  I think the time card transactions take is probably comparable with someone scrambling for the right change now, especially with the new chip and pin system.

saw someone buy a loaf of bread and milk worth 79p with a credit card.

a paper for 30p - they then went back and bought a mars bar - so around 70p total
There is a large Department store in New York that does not take cash at all, only plastic!
Ashamed to admit it but I once bought a packet of polos with a debit card. Good reason though, honest - the cash point wasn't working and I needed cash to get home, so the supermarket suggested buying something small to get cashback. Am I forgiven?
