I bank with Barclays, on one occasion I became distracted and allowed the ATM to take back the money I was trying to withdraw, the bank staff were able to access the machine and return the money. On another occasion it happened at an RBS machine at a branch of Tesco's, the shop staff could not help, Barclays said the money would be re-credited to my account, it never has. What happens to cash "lost" in this way? and realistically can it be retrieved?

You really should keep your wits about you at an ATM and this wouldn't happen (twice!).
I don't understand, I take the money out straight away when it pops out - what do you do, that gives it time to take it back in again? I think you need to redesign the way you to go the ATM, to make sure you take card/cash/receipt immediately.
Did you contact RBS and explain what happened? If not then you are unlikely to get a refund.
When this happened to me, I didnt forget to take my cash, it never gave me it. I bank with Yorkshire Bank, so i went to them they filled a form out to trace the money. I had my money back in 8 week. You need to go to your own bank! they also told me it would just go back in but never did, i cant remember if they said 10 or 14 days before they will chase it.
Crikey, you all had trouble getting your dosh back didn't you?

A few months ago, a Lloyds TSB ATM decided to break down just at the point where it's about to spit your money at you, and I wasn't able to get my sweaty mitts on it. I popped into the bank (who I also happen to bank with) told them, they asked me to leave it with them and pop back in half an hour. I did so, and they were able to confirm that no money had left my account and immediately gave it to me.
When it happened to me it was 1 of those free standing machines in the local Costcutter so no one to ask. Yorkshire Bank told me i should always use one of theres as its alot easier to sort out then.
Halifax ATM robbed me of £20. They were adamant this did not happen. Asked for £100 got £80. I closed both my accounts as did Mrs MM. This was nearly 27 years ago. Haven't banked with them since. They have lost a lot of money for telling me it couldn't happen. IT DID.
It can easily be retrieved. You need to contact Barclays and explain the ATM didn't give you your money ( no need to explain that you got distracted) and Barclays should re-credit the money . Barclays will then contact the owners of the machine and get the money back. If the ATM owners dispute that they are at fault then Barclays will then take the money back from you.
