I want to find out about something that happened around 1996, it made the national news. Where can I look to try and find it? I have tried googling it but with no sucess

What news item is it that you're looking for?

With google you may need to change the info that you are entering and also make sure that you are looking under "news" and not "web". You can also narrow the dates down.

in 1996 the internet wasn't all that "popular" - you might be better off looking at newspaper archives in the library for that year.Or post it here and get loads of answerbankers all looking for you :)

tbh not sure that that is "big" enough news to either make the national news or be a big news story. I'm sure it was big enough for the people involved but unless it was a very very slow news day, i can't see nationals being interested in something that probably happens quite a lot

I was told that it did make the national news bednobs but whether or not that is true I'm not sure. Do you think it would make the local news and be recorded in their archives?

CAJ ................ with personal experience of Devon's local papers ............ I'd say they'd certainly include a story like that.
Do you know which town?

The local records office might have back copies of the local newspaper from the time so you could try that when you`re in the area.

Thanks for the help wolf. Here is all I know:

The girl in question was raped by her step father
He also raped her friend (not sure if it was at the same time)
It happened around 1996, she would have been about 18
I think it was around the Minehead or Barnstaple area of Devon
The man went to prison for it (not sure how long for)
The mother got back with him when he got out of prison

I don't know anything further, hopefully this helps!

OK ............ Barnstaple ......... it would have been the North Devon Gazette.
Minehead ........... that's some way from B'ple ........... Google a bit. There may be a North Somerset Gazette.
Either way .............. it could possibly have been covered by The Western Morning News ........... that covers the whole peninsula.
Contacting a paper directly would I guess be the best way to find out how to access their archives.

Unfortunately, trying to be helpful, I tried to google a combination of father-rape-Devon-1996 and it came up with a raft of unpleasant stuff about Fred and Rosemary West - not, I guess, what you are looking for.
